Uses of Corn Coproducts in Beef and Dairy Rations
نویسنده
چکیده
Distillers grains (DG) are an excellent ruminant feedstuff. They are an excellent source both of energy and protein. In the production of alcohol, the starch, which is about two-thirds the composition of corn grain, is fermented to alcohol and CO2. The remaining nutrients are then concentrated by a factor of three. Corn protein of 10% is concentrated to 30% and fat (oil) from 4 to 12%. Fiber is concentrated from 14 to 42%. The fiber is highly digestible and the fat has about three times the energy of starch. The protein is high in undegraded intake protein (UIP).

Emissions savings in the corn-ethanol life cycle from feeding coproducts to livestock.
Environmental regulations on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from corn (Zea mays L.)-ethanol production require accurate assessment methods to determine emissions savings from coproducts that are fed to livestock. We investigated current use of coproducts in livestock diets and estimated the magnitude and variability in the GHG emissions credit for coproducts in the corn-ethanol life cycle. The ...
متن کاملUse of Glycerol in Dairy Rations
Increased cost of common feedstuffs and increased availability of coproducts from plant-based biofuel manufacturing has enhanced interest in the use of these coproducts in rations for dairy cattle (Donkin and Doane, 2007). Glycerol (commonly marketed as crude glycerine with a glycerol content of approximately 80%) is a coproduct produced during biodiesel production from soybean oil and is becom...
متن کاملEffect of timed interval frequent feeding of predominantly corn silage rations to beef steers.
C ORN silage is being utilized in increased quantities in beef cattle growing and fattening rations. The research data of Hammes et al. (1964), with various ratios of corn to corn silage in fattening rations, have demonstrated that higher levels of corn silage can be justified because gains between high grain and high silage rations are similar, whereas, use of higher silage rations permits the...
متن کاملAssessing protein availability of different bioethanol coproducts in dairy cattle.
Bioethanol production has led to the production of considerable quantities of different coproducts. Variation in nutrient profiles as well as nutrient availability among these coproducts may lead to an imbalance in the formulation of diets. The objectives of this study were to fractionate protein and carbohydrates by an in situ approach, to determine ruminal availability of nutrients for microb...
متن کاملAlternatives to Corn for Dairy Rations
A twoto four-fold increase in corn prices in recent years over historical trends has prompted many questions about alternatives to corn for dairy rations. As corn is a low protein high energy feedstuff, its continued use even with high prices or concern over its partial replacement is mainly confined to rations for lactating cows where meeting the energy requirements of milk production is impor...
